to test whether termites of the Cryptotermes domesticus species might be able to discriminate between different sizes of wood. The team constructed experiments that presented termites with blocks of wood with a standard crosssectional diameter of 20x20 mm but of either 20 mm or 160 mm length. The insects were placed in a gap between the two faces of the timber blocks so that they were not able ...
متن کاملThe Riis Complexity Gap for QBF Resolution
We give an analogue of the Riis Complexity Gap Theorem for Quantified Boolean Formulas (QBFs). Every first-order sentence φ without finite models gives rise to a sequence of QBFs whose minimal refutations in tree-like QResolution are either of polynomial size (if φ has no models) or at least exponential in size (if φ has some infinite model). However, differently from the translations to propos...

My objective in this article is to add evidence for the belief espoused above regarding the two elds of (i) signal processing and (ii) control and estimation. I focus here on the interaction of specialties from (i), i.e., adaptive ltering, and (ii), i.e., adaptive identi cation and control. For evidence, I use three basic communication systems applications of adaptive ltering to evoke system id...
متن کاملWavelength (å)
We present near-infrared (observed frame) spectra of the high-redshift quasar S4 0636+68 at z = 3.2 which was previously thought to be one of a group of “strong” Fe II emitters (i.e., F (Fe IIλλ4434–4684)/F (Hβ) > 1). Our K-band spectrum clearly shows emission lines of Hβ and [O III]λλ4959, 5007 as well as optical Fe II emission. Our computed value of F (Fe II λλ4434–4684)/F (Hβ) ≃ 0.8 for S4 0...
